Or Emet’s Mission is to be a caring and stimulating community celebrating humanistic Judaism. Humanistic Judaism embraces a human-centered philosophy that combines rational thinking with the celebration of Jewish culture and identity.

Or Emet welcomes all who identify with the history and culture of the Jewish people, and with the principles of Humanistic Judaism. The congregation offers a humanistic Jewish alternative for those who wish to celebrate Judaism in a creative and continually evolving community that includes single individuals, intercultural families and children of all ages.

Or Emet is an affiliate of the Society for Humanistic Judaism (SHJ), an international movement based in Detroit, Michigan, which has affiliates in North and South America, Israel, Europe and Australia.

In 1963 Sherwin Wine founded the Birmingham Temple in suburban Detroit, the first congregation of Humanistic Judaism. In 1969 he helped establish the Society for Humanistic Judaism. He also helped to create the International Federation of Secular Humanistic Jews, a worldwide association of national organizations. The American Humanist Association has selected him Humanist of the Year for 2003.
